the simplest form of your statement i've heard is " don't ask, don't get ".
i'm a living example of that.
i don't like to ask for things mostly because it seems selfish and self-centered, but also because it's embarrassing, and it's hard to assume permission to ask.
my concept of personal space is obviously not shared by most of the outside world, but i still see things from my own perspective and find it hard to believe that others would not be offended by my pushing in to their space to ask for whatever it is i want at the time. i suppose your comment on value is apt, but for quite a while now i have felt my only real value lies in taking care of my kids/woman and in tech support. neither of these add value to any interpersonal interaction outside my home, although the second is fine for working. i cannot imagine that others percieve value simply in interaction with me, and as such i mostly avoid new people. funny, the few people i know try to force me to socialize, so it seems they percieve some value, but for the life of me i can't figure out why.
well, anyway, thanks for your article, it was well-written, and the info goes into my data pile for slow assimilation.
