Geetali,

Great thoughts. I agree, often people avoid solitude because they can't stand to listen only to their own thoughts. If you can be comfortable with yourself, solitude is enjoyable.

As a person who lives by themselves and devoutly enjoys their solitude, I'd like to add my appreciation for this post. It goes to the heart of being alone. (Not ''lonely'', alone).
My days and nights are full: of work, interests, thoughts, memories, reflection. I cherish that.
Thank you for a lovely post, Scott.

Great article! I really wish I had come across the article months ago because it would have saved me a lot of misery and grief. Although some of the tips seem like common sense it is REALLY easy to not use them and fall victim to boredom.

I go to a really (really) small college (you see mostly the same people everyday and it's difficult to do anything off campus w/o a car). My roommate moved out halfway through the first semester( she couldn't stand the school), leaving me alone for the rest of the year. It wasn't so bad for a few weeks (i did some of the things mentioned in your entry) but since I lived in the quietest building, the solitude got to me the second month (or so). I started feeling really miserable and became depressed. Eventually it started feeling like prison and now when i look back on it, I feel like I lost a year of my life.

As I said, I really liked your entry because I've been through what happens when the tips aren't followed. Your article also gives me hope for the up coming semester. (MY last semester there before I transfer out! :-D)

[...] 10 Tips for Enjoying Solitude - I think the best mark of character isn’t how you handle the happy times when you’re surrounded by friends, but how you can handle moments that make most people uncomfortable. As Francis Bacon said, “Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.” [...]
