You&#039;re right - the fastest way to success is to do the boldest things like moving away from the podium and speak from the heart (translation - without notes!).  

I remember that happened to me many years ago when I was speaking for free to Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary Clubs.  One evening I made it a goal of mine to move away from my &quot;security blanket&quot; (podium) and mingle with the audience, Oprah-style.

Within a few minutes of doing that, my mind went blank!  It was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me as a public speaker.  But that&#039;s when I learned how to improvise on my feet and fess up.  The audience loved it and the speech was a hit.
