I tried to impress people when they were interviewing me to live in their house, and I haven't found a place yet... so yeah, I am going to stop trying to impress them and try asking lots of questions and making comments about them instead. Everyone's desperate to find a house, but unfortunately those renting out the places have way too many options and don't care about you unless you're totally awesome. Impress by not trying to impress. Heh.

Survivalist,

I'm sure you are. :)

Simon,

I didn't give specific recommendations because those would vary from place to place. I'm more of a high-level philosophy thinker with problems rather than worrying about the gritty details on this blog, more often.

But for recommendations, my favorite is Toastmasters. Many interesting people, at least at the clubs I've joined!

When I read the title of this article, "How To Meet Interesting People" I hoped that not only would you give the kind of advice that you did in your first four points, but also that you would give tips on "where" to find interesting people. I believe that your article would have been more convincing if you had given at least a few specific examples of where to find interesting people. Saying that "they're everywhere" is the same thing as telling them to figure it out for themselves.
Thanks.

You have some good advice about not limiting yourself. But I find that a lot of your suggestions will be useless if you're not looking for people who are interesting, but also people who are interested in some specific field.
Personally, I'm looking for young people who are interested in computer science but are also interested in writing about what they do. I'm a blogger and I'm trying to build (or join) a network of young technology bloggers, but I haven't really found anyone who I can connect with. Do you have any suggestions for focussed people searching like that?

I was glad to see you put up the percentages about people we know. Our whole social environment can be such a small percentage of the people out there, but we tend to feel that they are "everyone" in some cases. Reminding ourselves that we know around 0.000001% of people(or some similar percentage) would bring us down to earth when we start to feel cocky or above others.

That point about building a cult also reminds us to not head in that direction. Once you filter out one item, then another, and then another, you end up knowing three people that agree with you on everything because they have also shut out outside influences or messages. That is not a healthy way to go, as numerous options get removed when you head in that direction.

Thanks again for your down-to-earth discussion.
