In your career, most of the opportunities will come through other people, and people give opportunities to the people they like. In relationships, someone has to like you before they can love you. Anywhere in life, if people like you, they are more willing to help.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, likability has picked up a bad reputation. I read advice that says: make people either love you or hate you, popularity is an unhealthy vanity, the best minds were criticized by everyone around them. Ayn Rand glorified a dislikable character with Howard Roark, the hero of <em>The Fountainhead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>People confuse likability with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>being generic<\/li>\n<li>being wimpy<\/li>\n<li>being too dependent on others<\/li>\n<li>putting popularity above principles<\/li>\n<li>or general diplomatic smarminess<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, all of these qualities, I would associate with a dislikable person. A generic, wimpy, dependant, smarmy diplomat isn\u2019t a likable guy\u2013he\u2019s a tool.<\/p>\n<p>Likability isn\u2019t any of those things. It just means that people, on average, tend to form a good first impression of you, and that you are easy to like. That\u2019s it. If likability means sacrificing your principles, independence or uniqueness, you\u2019re doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<h2>The Power of Being a Likable Person<\/h2>\n<p>Likability doesn\u2019t sound sexy. It sounds rather bland. Most people would rather have secret-ninja-style pickup lines, the perfect sales pitch or jedi mind-trick persuasiveness. While being likable isn\u2019t magic, I think it does have a dramatic impact on your life.<\/p>\n<p>Consider running a business. In any business, you need to deal with people all the time: customers, suppliers, contractors, employees, and peers. If your customers don\u2019t like you, they\u2019ll buy from somebody else. If your suppliers don\u2019t like you, they won\u2019t give you their best rates. If your contractors dislike you, they won\u2019t be as serious about delivering on time, same with employees and you can forget about getting help from peers who dislike you.<\/p>\n<p>From every angle of human interaction the basic question: \u201cDo I like this person?\u201d is being asked. Being able to get more people to say, \u201cyes\u201d to this question has a huge impact.<\/p>\n<p>Likability is orthogonal to remarkability, courage and character. That means, how likable you are has almost nothing to do with your uniqueness as an individual, whether you\u2019re a hero or a wimp, morally upstanding or shifty. I\u2019ve met courageous, unique, morally upstanding people I really dislike. And I\u2019ve also met generic, wimpy and sometimes dishonest people that, for the most part, were very easy to converse with and enjoy their company.<\/p>\n<p>For every one of the previously mentioned character traits, I\u2019ve met people who\u2019ve had it that I like, and people who\u2019ve had it that I dislike. So, why not be on the more likable side?<\/p>\n<h2>Likability is a Social Skill<\/h2>\n<p>Likability is simply a social skill, just like any other. Just like a good public speaker can deliver a persuasive speech, someone who has practiced the social skills of likability is easier to befriend.<\/p>\n<p>Although the list is certainly incomplete, a few skills I associate with likable people are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Being nice<\/strong>. Nice isn\u2019t wimpy, it\u2019s just not being rude. Often people with lower confidence try to become more confident by being a jerk. Truly self-assured people don\u2019t need to do this, so the most genuinely confident people are also often nicer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Friendliness<\/strong>. No matter how scared, unsure and lousy you feel you are at meeting new people, you can train yourself to be friendlier. There is a limit where friendliness becomes aggressive and rude, but most of the people I know are far below that threshold.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong>. A likable person is observant, and avoids doing things to offend the other person. Or, if they do offend the other person, they are aware of that fact, and realize it is because of a deliberate choice. This is the difference between teasing a person\u2019s accent, which may insult the person unintentionally, and standing your ground if someone doesn\u2019t like your religion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Humor and Lightness<\/strong>. Likable people are usually easy-going, funny and lighthearted. It\u2019s not that they are never serious, angry or sullen, just that they pick those moments wisely so that people don\u2019t assume that\u2019s their entire personality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relating Their Passions<\/strong>. Likable people are easy to relate to. They\u2019ve learned how to explain their passions and drives in a way other people can readily understand. I don\u2019t particularly like skateboarding, but if you\u2019re passionate about that as a hobby, you should be able to make me understand why you do.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>But focusing on the specifics of the skill isn\u2019t as important as the attitude that goes with it. If you accept that likability matters, you can make yourself more likable to people around you. You can strive to be nicer. You can aim to be friendlier. You can work on being empathetic to realize when you might be unintentionally stepping on someone\u2019s toes. You can work on your sense of humor. You can explain your passions in a way that excites people who have never heard of them before.<\/p>\n<h2>Likability isn\u2019t Everything, Just One of Many Important Things<\/h2>\n<p>I think some of the backlash towards likability is due to a certain breed of people. These are people who do everything and anything to be liked. They mimic their friends. Violate their personal standards. Bow down and grovel in the desperate need for attention. These people believe popularity isn\u2019t just one important characteristic, but the only important characteristic.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be one of these people. For starters, I don\u2019t think their approach is very effective. Paradoxically, if you sacrifice everything for likability, you aren\u2019t usually very likable. Trying too hard to be cool typically only makes you a loser. Second, likability is just one of many other traits that are useful to have, it isn\u2019t worth sacrificing everything for.<\/p>\n<p>But, if you put likability in the right context, it\u2019s a powerful tool. It makes relationships easier and it gives you more opportunities without manipulating other people. People help you because they genuinely want to help someone they like.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Likability matters.
