Studying matters, but for most of us it\u2019s only a small slice of our lives. If you aren\u2019t a student you might not study at all.<\/p>\n<p>Learning, however, underpins your entire life:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Relationships<\/strong>. Understanding your partner and knowing how to communicate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work<\/strong>. A great career comes from being good at rare and valuable skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health<\/strong>. Not merely what to eat or when to exercise, but learning to stick with it long-term.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your sense of meaning in life.<\/strong> We aren\u2019t born knowing how to live. It\u2019s for each of us to figure out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given the omnipresence of learning, it makes sense to understand how it works. How can you get better at not just academic topics, but the things you do every day?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typesetter Trouble: Why 10,000 Hours Often Isn\u2019t Enough<\/h2>\n<div class=\"inline-podcast\">\n<small>Listen to this article<\/small><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/848276104&amp;color=%23219895&amp;inverse=false&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_user=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"20\" frameborder=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>One might counter that even if learning is everywhere, don\u2019t we just learn automatically? The key to getting better is just putting in the work, right?<\/p>\n<p>The idea that ten thousand hours is a \u201crule\u201d for expertise has always been somewhat silly. First, the research the rule was based on suggested it was only an average, not a fixed amount. Second, the rule implies just getting a lot of hours is the key. In fact, the research showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/224827585_The_Role_of_Deliberate_Practice_in_the_Acquisition_of_Expert_Performance\">pretty much the opposite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More time with a skill doesn\u2019t lead to mastery. Instead, we reach a comfortable level of ability and get stuck. Improvement is the exception, not the rule.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ten-thousand-hours-fact-and-fiction_blog.png\" alt=\"10,000 Hour Rule: Fact and Fiction\" class=\"wp-image-12113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ten-thousand-hours-fact-and-fiction_blog.png 600w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ten-thousand-hours-fact-and-fiction_blog-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ten-thousand-hours-fact-and-fiction_blog-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Early research on professional typesetters was one of the first pieces of evidence that led to Anders Ericsson\u2019s formulation of deliberate practice. It was found that many of them plateaued in speed, even after over a decade of experience.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they had just hit their limit though? Most tasks have a speed limit, and perhaps the typesetters had reached theirs?<\/p>\n<p>Turns out this was false. Given feedback, training and financial incentives, speed improved by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/08919402.1922.10532882\">as much as 93%<\/a>. Doing something every day doesn\u2019t guarantee mastery, it only guarantees adequacy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Separates Growth from Stagnation<\/h2>\n<p>Ericsson\u2019s insight was that practice had to be deliberate to provoke improvement.<\/p>\n<p>His research on violinists found that those who went on to become concert performers didn\u2019t practice more, but the ratio of time spent in this deliberate practice to play was much higher.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/best-and-rest_blog.png\" alt=\"Top performing violinists spent the same time with music, but a much higher ratio on deliberate practice than average.\" class=\"wp-image-12114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/best-and-rest_blog.png 600w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/best-and-rest_blog-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/best-and-rest_blog-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Deliberate practice means overcoming automaticity and new innovations to push performance higher. <\/p>\n<p>The origin of research on deliberate practice came from studies on digit span. Digit span is the ability to remember a string of numbers and repeat them back\u2014one in which most humans are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Magical_Number_Seven,_Plus_or_Minus_Two\">famously limited to 5-9 items.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Working deliberately, however, one participant managed to boost his digit span from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peak-Secrets-New-Science-Expertise\/dp\/0544947223\/\">all the way to 82<\/a>. He did this by creating mnemonic strategies for translating the numbers into running terms (the participant was a serious runner).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Avoid Getting Stuck?<\/h2>\n<p>How can you truly get a little better every day, instead of spinning your wheels?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s five simple suggestions:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Hop to more challenging environments.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/change-environ_blog_2.png\" alt=\"1. Hop to a more challenging environment.\" class=\"wp-image-12116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/change-environ_blog_2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/change-environ_blog_2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/change-environ_blog_2-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Plateaus occur because when our performance is adequate, we make it automatic. This calcifies bad habits and creates a barrier to improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Upping the challenge in a new situation, where you\u2019re no longer adequate, is a good way to switch back to the fast part of the learning curve.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Get a coach.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/coach_blog_2.png\" alt=\"2. Get a coach.\" class=\"wp-image-12123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/coach_blog_2.png 600w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/coach_blog_2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/coach_blog_2-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Coaching was always a central feature of deliberate practice. While coaches are available for everyone, you can still pay to get access to high-quality instruction and feedback.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re on a tight budget, informally asking for feedback can often work too. The key is to be the kind of person people want to help. Be proactive and humble, willing to soak up advice.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Breakthroughs come from new methods.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/breakthroughs_blog.png\" alt=\"3. Without new methods, you can easily get stuck improving something that\u2019s obsolete.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube is an incredible tool here. Learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1y5h1pDHhzs\">how to mince garlic properly<\/a> made cooking easier for me. But it\u2019s the kind of thing I\u2019d never have discovered by experimentation alone.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Join a community of practice.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/community_blog_2.png\" alt=\"4. We\u2019re designed to learn from the experience of others.<\/p>\n<p>As a great example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/03\/ultralearning-environments\/\">look at Tetris<\/a>. When the game first came out, it was played by hundreds of millions. Now, despite having far fewer players, people are <em>much<\/em> better at it. How? Because they have a community that can share methods and learn from each other.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Find one thing you can do better in every attempt.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/better-every-day_blog.png\" alt=\"5. In everyday things, there\u2019s thousands of details that contribute to the outcome. Don\u2019t try to improve everything. Aim at a specific enhancement you could make each time.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cooking a recipe?<\/strong> What if you got better at dicing the onions?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing an email?<\/strong> Pick one sentence and rewrite it to make it more clear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lifting weight?<\/strong> What\u2019s one part of the movement you could perfect?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today\u2019s Homework: One Everyday Thing You Could Do Better<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s apply these lessons from deliberate practice to something simple in your life:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pick one thing you do every day<\/strong>. It could be writing an email, folding your clothes or chopping vegetables.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do a Google search for ways you can do it better<\/strong>. See if there are any tutorials from experts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The next time you do it, focus on doing it a little bit better<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Share your plan in the comments<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Small improvements add up over time.
