One-on-one tutoring is one of the most effective ways to learn anything. In his famous paper<\/a> on the \u201c2 sigma problem\u201d in educational research, Benjamin Bloom called for a search for group teaching interventions that approximated the efficacy of tutoring:<\/p>\n

However, the most striking of the findings is that under the best learning conditions we can devise (tutoring), the average student is 2 sigma [standard deviations] above the average control student taught under conventional group methods of instruction.<\/p>\n

This is the \u201c2 sigma\u201d problem. Can researchers and teachers devise teaching-learning conditions that will enable the majority of students under group instruction to attain levels of achievement that can at present be reached only under good tutoring conditions?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Bloom later argues that mastery learning<\/a>, the idea that students should fully master prerequisite knowledge before moving on to later subjects, comes close to this ideal. However, a simple conclusion can be drawn from this work: tutoring is quite effective, and we all should be using it more.<\/p>\n
