Read your books, study the material and practice, practice, practice. That\u2019s the way to learn, right? I think that viewpoint is a bit too simplistic. In reality, the people you surround yourself with can be a catalyst for learning. I believe this is true even if they never give you a lesson or memorable piece of advice.<\/p>\n

The academic theory of learning goes a little like this:<\/p>\n

\"Academic<\/p>\n

You seek out information, either directly from books and training or indirectly through experience. That information becomes knowledge, which then become skills.<\/p>\n

Instead of this view, I\u2019d like to state that learning (not just getting A\u2019s but having useful skills) doesn\u2019t occur in a straight line. Skills are developed partly unconsciously as you soak up the beliefs, attitudes and perceptions of your environment.<\/p>\n

\"Catalyst<\/p>\n

Creating an Intelligence Catalyst<\/h2>\n

Catalysts can accelerate a reaction between two compounds. An intelligence catalyst is an environment that speeds up your ability to learn. This form of learning isn\u2019t often academic, pick A-B-C-or-D-type learning. But if you need useful skills, creating a catalyst is a must.<\/p>\n

Although all the elements of your environment influence your self-education, people are the most important factor. By building relationships with people who have skills, the beliefs, attitudes and perceptions they have will rub off on you. This learning by osmosis is difficult to quantify, but when you look over a period of years the person with the best network tends to have more expertise.<\/p>\n

Networking for Brains<\/h2>\n

I somewhat dislike the term \u201cnetworking.\u201d It makes the social process seem cold and transactional. \u201cMaking friends\u201d would probably be a much better term to describe how networking should be done.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, it is easy to view networking as being only for direct benefits. \u201cIt\u2019s not what you know, but who you know,\u201d illustrates this point. But I\u2019ve found that the tangible benefits of networking is fairly limited, especially when you consider the intellectual cost of investing time and energy into building relationships.<\/p>\n

Instead, I like to see networking as building my intelligence catalyst. The invisible surface that accelerates my skills. By building bonds with people I can leech off some of that intangible essence that makes them good at what they do.<\/p>\n

People Like Brain Networkers<\/h2>\n

An added benefit of this desire to build an intelligence catalyst, is that it makes networking easier. Instead of a quick handshake and business card exchange, you actually get interested in the person you are meeting. Learning about them is your goal, not just an in-between step for a big client or job offer.<\/p>\n

When you start networking for brains, the other benefit is that you\u2019ll meet people you\u2019d otherwise ignore. One downside of an intelligence catalyst is that if you surround yourself with people only in your field, you miss external perspectives. It often takes an outsider to destroy established thinking because everyone was following the herd.<\/p>\n

Goalless action<\/a> is crucial for brain networking. There\u2019s a principle in philosophy which states that if you expect what you are going to learn, you already know it. In other words, you can\u2019t tell the value of information without actually viewing the information. Meeting people from all areas can provide value in ways you might never have expected.<\/p>\n

How to Start<\/h2>\n

I don\u2019t claim to be the worlds best networker. But I do strive to be the best listener. The best at finding someone and being receptive for how they can become an intelligence catalyst. I\u2019ve made hundreds of friends online, through the phone or in person. And with each, I strive to absorb as much as I can.<\/p>\n

Here are some tips:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Who Cares About You?<\/strong> – When networking for prestige or direct benefits, it can be tempting to talk all about yourself. Time spent listening is far more worthwhile. You might need a bit of an introduction to start a conversation, but once you do put the focus on what the other person is best at.<\/li>\n
  2. Relate, Don\u2019t Probe<\/strong> – Your job isn\u2019t to interrogate, but to let them reveal information when they want to. Spend your half of the conversation relating back as much as you can to personal experiences. Not only does this help build a rapport, it makes people feel more comfortable sharing insights.<\/li>\n
  3. Follow Up<\/strong> – Take the initiative to meet people and move forward conversations. You don\u2019t need an excuse to be outgoing and interested in other people.<\/li>\n
  4. Ask Dumb Questions <\/strong>– When you deal with people who have a particular expertise, you might feel awkward asking them to explain something. Do it anyways. The best way to learn is to ask, so humble yourself and you\u2019ll have a better catalyst.<\/li>\n
  5. Ask for Introductions <\/strong>– It\u2019s way easier when you don\u2019t have to cold-call. I\u2019ve met many people who freely give introductions and I try to connect people when I feel they might be able to benefit. But don\u2019t wait to be introduced. Ask people you know if they can connect you with people who might have knowledge, experience or perceptions you want.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    My challenge to you today is to pick one person vaguely associated in your network. This could be someone you\u2019ve had a few e-mails with, conversed with or is a friend of a friend. Someone you don\u2019t know much about. Ask them to meet-up or chat on the phone and try to just listen as much as you can about them.
