you need and what you have.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019d also say that drive is the difference between what you have and what you want.\u00c2\u00a0 Since both drive and contentment are important, I think it\u2019s important to have as big a gap as possible between your needs and wants.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us are clear on what our needs and wants are.\u00c2\u00a0 Mainly because society tells us what they are.\u00c2\u00a0 Food, shelter and water are lumped into the \u201cneed\u201d pile.\u00c2\u00a0 Fancy cars, televisions and luxuries are lumped into the \u201cwant\u201d pile.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are societal definitions of needs and wants, I think we each have our own psychological definitions.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u2019s these psychological definitions of needs and wants that determine how big a gap we have between them.\u00c2\u00a0 And a bigger gap means you can simultaneously be more content with the current situation while still having ambition for the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Psychological Needs and Wants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to take the liberty of defining your \u201cneeds\u201d as being anything that has negative weight when you don\u2019t have it.\u00c2\u00a0 In other words, if you have your needs filled, you are neutral.\u00c2\u00a0 But if they aren\u2019t filled, you\u2019re experiencing a negative.<\/p>\n<p>If one of your needs is having a car, for example, then you won\u2019t be happy if you have a car.\u00c2\u00a0 You probably won\u2019t even think about it.\u00c2\u00a0 Having a car is an expected need, so fulfilling it doesn\u2019t take notice.\u00c2\u00a0 However, if your car were stolen one day you\u2019d feel awful.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cwant\u201d is anything that is neutral when you don\u2019t have it, but positive when you achieve it.\u00c2\u00a0 For me, having a million dollars is a want.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to be less happy knowing that I don\u2019t have a million bucks.\u00c2\u00a0 But I\u2019d certainly be thrilled if I found a million dollar deposit in my bank account tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fewer Needs, More Wants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an ideal world, where you could control your needs and wants like dials on a dashboard, you would want as few needs and as many wants as possible.\u00c2\u00a0 Needs are either neutral or negative, so having few needs makes it relatively easy to stay content.\u00c2\u00a0 Wants are either neutral or positive, so having lots of wants makes it relatively easy to stay driven.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, life doesn\u2019t offer a magic psychological dashboard.\u00c2\u00a0 But, I don\u2019t think that makes you helpless in shifting the two up and down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Lower Your Needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first half of the equation would be to lower your needs.\u00c2\u00a0 Lower the amount that you need in order to be content.\u00c2\u00a0 The lower this threshold is, the more life can throw at you without disturbing your inner state of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Needs are often created out of habit.\u00c2\u00a0 A car might become a need for you if you drive every day to work.\u00c2\u00a0 It becomes so ingrained in your reality that it shifted from a want (remember when you didn\u2019t own a car) to a need.<\/p>\n<p>I think you can keep your needs lower if you find ways to occasionally break your old habits.\u00c2\u00a0 Try going to work one day on the bus.\u00c2\u00a0 It might be challenging, but it helps you appreciate the benefits of having a car.\u00c2\u00a0 Travel to a different country and go on bike tours instead of car trips.\u00c2\u00a0 Avoid a rental if your car needs to go to the garage.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m guessing few people are going to take on these need-lowering activities just like they won\u2019t stick their hand into a naked flame.\u00c2\u00a0 Lowering needs directly is possible, but few people want to spend the time and energy to do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Despite this, I think it\u2019s important to occasionally put yourself in situations where your needs are unavailable to you.\u00c2\u00a0 Go camping and you will reduce your \u201cneed\u201d for a shower.<\/p>\n<p><strong> How to Increase Your Wants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lowering needs is good, but it\u2019s far easier to increase your wants.\u00c2\u00a0 Needs form automatically out of habit, but wants take extra energy to pursue.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019d rather want a lot and need a lot, than want little and need little.\u00c2\u00a0 For me, drive is more important than contentment, although having both is ideal.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to keep your wants high is to set goals and think about your goals often.\u00c2\u00a0 I do a weekly review every Sunday that keeps me on track with my goals and plans.\u00c2\u00a0 By reviewing my goals and brainstorming them, I keep my wants fresh in my mind.\u00c2\u00a0 Without this regular tune-up, your wants tend to sink down into what is right in front of you.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Wants and Needs Aren\u2019t the Same Thing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/20\/youre-allowed-to-be-happy-and-ambitious-at-the-same-time\/\">written before<\/a> about the apparent paradox of being incredibly ambitious but also content with the current situation.\u00c2\u00a0 The reason this seems impossible is that most people don\u2019t distinguish their wants and needs.\u00c2\u00a0 As a result, they can\u2019t visualize striving for a goal without becoming addicted to it.<\/p>\n<p>I think if you split the two up, the problem of ambition is resolved.\u00c2\u00a0 In my life, I try to need little.\u00c2\u00a0 This won\u2019t always be possible, but my ideal is to be satisfied with little money, few friends and hard conditions.\u00c2\u00a0 But, at the same time, I want wealth, huge social circles and amazing experiences.\u00c2\u00a0 I think the bigger you can make the space between those two, the easier it is to be
