Over a year ago, I wrote an article<\/a> about how I have managed to ace high-school and university exams with very little studying.\u00c2\u00a0 The article became one of the most popular articles on the website, and I\u2019ve since written two e-books continuing the core idea: holistic learning.<\/p>\n

Since writing the initial article, and the two follow-up books, I\u2019ve received a lot of reader questions.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019d like to answer some of the main ones here, including the most common question I get asked, \u201cHow do I become a holistic learner?\u201d<\/p>\n

Question #1: \u201cIt\u2019s been a year since you wrote How to Ace Your Finals Without Studying, do you still write exams without studying?\u201d<\/h4>\n

No, I don\u2019t write exams without some \u201cstudying\u201d.\u00c2\u00a0 Although I have done this successfully in the past, it can be a bit of a gamble.\u00c2\u00a0 With absolutely no review period, you no longer have a backup in case you missed something the first time.\u00c2\u00a0 I wouldn’t want to skydive without the backup parachute, and I try to avoid going into important exams without some confirmation I haven’t missed anything.<\/p>\n

For most of my exams I have a short test run of typical questions or concepts to make sure that I understand everything.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019ll also nail down concepts that are harder to learn holistically and need a bit of memorization.\u00c2\u00a0 For some exams, I\u2019ve also taken practice exams as an extra step to make sure I wasn\u2019t tricked into overconfidence.<\/p>\n

Although this sounds like a pretty typical studying routine, I\u2019d like to point out what I don\u2019t do:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Learn things before the exam<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Holistic learning is about understanding ideas at a deeper level.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019m definitely not learning ideas for the first time when I sit down to study.\u00c2\u00a0 Studying should be strictly review.<\/li>\n
  2. All-night (or even all-day) cramming<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 My last term in university had five fairly difficult exams stuck into a one week period.\u00c2\u00a0 During this week I did all my regular activities and had a fairly relaxed review period.<\/li>\n
  3. Repeat the same concepts<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 One or two reviews should be enough to know something for an exam.\u00c2\u00a0 If you need to do review questions of the same concepts several times, your learning could probably be more efficient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Learn More, Study Less<\/a> isn\u2019t about eliminating studying entirely.\u00c2\u00a0 But it\u2019s about becoming far more efficient in your studying habits and the way you learn, so that you don\u2019t need to repeat the same ideas over and over again.<\/p>\n

    Question #2: \u201cCan I use holistic learning with subject X or Y?\u201d<\/h4>\n

    Holistic learning isn\u2019t a technique.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u2019s a broader strategy of how to approach learning, and a philosophy of how to learn the most with the least amount of strain.\u00c2\u00a0 While I can\u2019t guarantee that this philosophy will work best for every subject, almost every learning task I\u2019ve encountered fits well within this perspective.<\/p>\n

    Since holistic learning isn\u2019t a technique, you need to find techniques that help you learn holistically.\u00c2\u00a0 I wrote about nearly a dozen of these in Learn More, Study Less<\/em>, but they are just a starting point.\u00c2\u00a0 If you have a holistic learning perspective, it isn\u2019t hard to come up with studying tricks that make sense.<\/p>\n

    So the simple answer to the question is, yes, holistic learning will work with subject X.\u00c2\u00a0 You might have to change your techniques to match the type of information and your learning style, but the overall strategy should be the same: make links between ideas to remember them.<\/p>\n

    Question #3: \u201cHow do I become a holistic learner?\u201d<\/h4>\n

    I didn\u2019t answer this question in my initial article<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I spent a lot of time describing what holistic learning is, but not as much time describing how to do it.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019ve had many people read my article on the subject, but still aren\u2019t sure how to apply it.\u00c2\u00a0 Much of Learn More, Study Less<\/em> is devoted to answering this question, but I\u2019d like to offer a simple answer.<\/p>\n

    You already are a holistic learner.\u00c2\u00a0 You automatically learn by connecting ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 This isn\u2019t something foreign to you, it\u2019s something you\u2019re doing all the time.\u00c2\u00a0 Holistic learning is about taking that natural habit of making connections between ideas to the next level.\u00c2\u00a0 If you\u2019re aware of how you are making connections, you can do more of it.<\/p>\n

    Think back to a subject you were really interested in.\u00c2\u00a0 A class where you couldn\u2019t be distracted and were completely engaged in what was being said.\u00c2\u00a0 Find a specific time and try to imagine it.\u00c2\u00a0 Now ask yourself what you were doing?\u00c2\u00a0 Were you:<\/p>\n

    A) Writing down what was said, word for word.
    \nB) Thinking of applications for the ideas, finding gaps in your knowledge that these new concepts filled or asking yourself about how these ideas fit together.<\/p>\n

    Obviously, if you really enjoy the class and the subject, the ideas come together.\u00c2\u00a0 You find connections with your other interests and you ask deeper questions about the topic instead of just copying it into your notes to be memorized later.\u00c2\u00a0 You were learning holistically.<\/p>\n

    This applies when you\u2019re reading a book.\u00c2\u00a0 If I\u2019m reading a great book, I\u2019m making tons of connections between the material in the book and my life and interests.\u00c2\u00a0 I often need to stop reading because my own train of thought is breaking away from the page and I\u2019m having trouble reading and thinking at the same time.<\/p>\n

    I don\u2019t think holistic learning and enthusiasm for learning are the same thing, but they are definitely related.\u00c2\u00a0 If you\u2019re very interested in a topic, that tends to create the overflowing of connections you need to learn holistically.\u00c2\u00a0 Similarly, if you\u2019re learning with many connections, what you learn becomes more interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u2019s a positive cycle where holistic learning and engagement strengthen each other.<\/p>\n

    So, how do you use this?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    People have asked me, \u201cWhat should I make connections for when I\u2019m learning calculus?\u201d\u00c2\u00a0 These people don\u2019t get it.\u00c2\u00a0 Holistic learning isn\u2019t about forcing connections, it\u2019s about finding connections.\u00c2\u00a0 It needs to be like playing in a sandbox, building something creative.\u00c2\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about whether the connections make sense or are the \u201cbest\u201d connections to make.\u00c2\u00a0 Focus on exploring ideas and see what they connect to.<\/p>\n

    This works on subjects you find incredibly boring too.\u00c2\u00a0 As part of my degree in commerce, I\u2019ve taken classes is accounting (my major is entrepreneurship).\u00c2\u00a0 I hate accounting.\u00c2\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t use that creative enthusiasm to my advantage.\u00c2\u00a0 Whenever I encountered an idea, I started with the attitude that there were many different connections, I just had to look for them.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes the connections weren\u2019t helpful, sometimes they were.\u00c2\u00a0 But building those connections helped me remember something I would have otherwise forgotten.<\/p>\n

    Holistic learning is as much an attitude as it is a method.\u00c2\u00a0 When you learn a new idea, begin with the perspective that there are an infinite amount of applications, metaphors or descriptions that can fit with this idea and everything else you know.\u00c2\u00a0 When you start with that attitude, you\u2019re more open to the first few connections that fall into your mind.<\/p>\n

    Be childish again.\u00c2\u00a0 Kids make bizarre drawings all the time, that connect things they know together.\u00c2\u00a0 I think the emphasis on being mature and conforming to the group has stifled that original intelligence.\u00c2\u00a0 My notebooks aren\u2019t filled just with exact copies of slideshow presentations, I add drawings and diagrams to help me bridge ideas.<\/p>\n

    In the start of my book, I wrote about how most people try to learn like a computer accepts data.\u00c2\u00a0 Transmit the input and store it in your brain.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, people aren\u2019t robots.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead, make ideas vivid, messy and exciting.\u00c2\u00a0 Learn like a kid again.<\/p>\n
