{"id":823,"date":"2008-08-25T10:00:38","date_gmt":"2008-08-25T17:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/25\/7-reasons-why-the-gym-is-better-than-therapy\/"},"modified":"2018-04-03T08:51:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T15:51:36","slug":"7-reasons-why-the-gym-is-better-than-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/25\/7-reasons-why-the-gym-is-better-than-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"7 Reasons Why the Gym is Better Than Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/danielflower\/392894197\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/workout.png\" alt=\"Workout.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have a love affair with my gym.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u2019s not much to look at: a rubber track and weight room in a dank basement, but appearances aren\u2019t everything.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u2019s there on my best days and on my worst days.\u00c2\u00a0 We never fight, and she doesn\u2019t care what I look like as long as I give her my full attention for a few hours a week.<\/p>\n<p>I was talking with a fellow gym goer recently (the gym and I have an open relationship).\u00c2\u00a0 He mentioned that whenever he is facing something frustrating, he goes to the gym.\u00c2\u00a0 The gym is his form of therapy, and if I think about it, it\u2019s my stress release too.\u00c2\u00a0 So, I\u2019d like to present my list of seven reasons the gym is better than therapy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: I\u2019m joking.\u00c2\u00a0 If you\u2019re facing serious problems, talk to someone and face them, don\u2019t just vent at the gym.\u00c2\u00a0 But, for smaller stresses, the gym can be one of the best therapists money can buy.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>#1 &#8211; The Gym is Cheaper<\/h2>\n<p>A typical gym membership costs about $300 a year.\u00c2\u00a0 If you go to a therapist, once a week for $100 an hour, that\u2019s $5200 per year.\u00c2\u00a0 If anything, the gym is a discount stress-reliever, far cheaper than paying someone to hear you talk.<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit: the gym doesn\u2019t charge for the hour.\u00c2\u00a0 If you need ninety minutes to sort out a particularly stressful day, she won\u2019t mind and she won\u2019t charge you extra.\u00c2\u00a0 If you want to go a few times a week, or even twice on the same day, that\u2019s fine too.\u00c2\u00a0 In some places, gyms are even open 24 hours, so you can resolve stress at any time of day.<\/p>\n<h2>#2 &#8211; The Gym Won\u2019t Give Advice<\/h2>\n<p>At first, this doesn\u2019t seem like a benefit.\u00c2\u00a0 The reason you pay a therapist is to get advice on your problems, right?\u00c2\u00a0 But, sometimes it can be.\u00c2\u00a0 Many times you go looking for advice, you really just want to think.\u00c2\u00a0 You want an empathetic ear to hear your worries while you think about what to do.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t say the gym is empathetic (she\u2019s pretty unfeeling).\u00c2\u00a0 But, she doesn\u2019t give you advice.\u00c2\u00a0 So if you want to think a situation over for an hour before coming to a decision, she\u2019s patient.<\/p>\n<h2>#3 &#8211; You Won\u2019t Get Fat<\/h2>\n<p>The gym does double-duty.\u00c2\u00a0 She helps you keep your stresses to a minimum, and she keeps you in shape.\u00c2\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of package deal you can\u2019t get lying on a couch.<\/p>\n<h2>#4 &#8211; Free Drugs (natural, of course)<\/h2>\n<p>When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins.\u00c2\u00a0 These chemicals are associated with feeling happy and relieving pain.\u00c2\u00a0 Your body also releases endorphins during an orgasm and when taking cocaine.\u00c2\u00a0 The extra endorphins often result in a \u201crunner\u2019s high,\u201d a feeling of well-being after exercise.<\/p>\n<h2>#5 &#8211; Breathing Exercises<\/h2>\n<p>Your breathing affects how you feel.\u00c2\u00a0 Try to stay angry after taking ten, 15-second breaths.\u00c2\u00a0 Although some therapy may do breathing exercises, the gym is a constant breathing exercise.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re lifting weights, you exhale as you lift the weight and inhale as you lower it back down.\u00c2\u00a0 When you\u2019re running, you need to keep a constant breathing pace in line with your steps.
