Gathering ideas is cheap, implementing ideas is expensive.\u00c2\u00a0 Reading a business book takes several hours over the course of a week.\u00c2\u00a0 Starting a business takes thousands of hours over the course of years.\u00c2\u00a0 Making ideas a reality is orders of magnitude more difficult than gathering creative ideas.<\/p>\n

This simple fact is the reason I\u2019m a big believer in gathering far more ideas than you can possibly implement.\u00c2\u00a0 When the amount of effort it takes to find ideas is 10, 100 or even 1000 times less than the cost of putting it into action, it pays not to waste your time on mediocre ideas.<\/p>\n

A High-Idea Diet<\/h2>\n

A high-idea diet involves reading and learning more than you need to know.\u00c2\u00a0 I feel there are three main benefits you can gain from consuming more ideas than you can possibly implement.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Only the best ideas are put into action.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 If you\u2019re constantly exposed to ideas, you have the ability to pick the best ones to act on.\u00c2\u00a0 A high-idea diet ensures you\u2019re never left wondering what to do next.<\/li>\n
  2. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 You become more creative.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Whenever I stop reading, or my reading habits slow down, I find it more difficult to write or design.\u00c2\u00a0 Ideas can be fodder for your own creativity, forming a foundation to build on.<\/li>\n
  3. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 You have more energy.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 I get the most done when I have lots of ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 Debating between idea gathering and idea implementation often doesn\u2019t make sense.\u00c2\u00a0 The more ideas you gather, the more enthusiasm you have to implement them.\u00c2\u00a0 It isn\u2019t a zero-sum game where you either learn more and do less, or do more and learn less.\u00c2\u00a0 You can have both.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I should add that my version of a high-information diet, also implies a high-value of ideas in that diet.\u00c2\u00a0 Subscribing to hundreds of blogs and skimming every post, or buying trashy novels and nonfiction books that are completely derivative works won\u2019t get you new ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 The amount of new, valuable ideas, not the sheer amount of information is what matters.<\/p>\n

    What About the Paradox of Choice?<\/h2>\n

    The paradox of choice is that when presented with more choices, humans tend to make worse decisions.\u00c2\u00a0 Our brains are inefficient computers, so when presented with a list of 20 or 30 choices, it can often be hard to decide which is the best option.\u00c2\u00a0 Limitation is often the mother of creativity and too many choices can be a prison.<\/p>\n

    Although this is a valid counter-argument to a high-idea diet, I think it is misguided.\u00c2\u00a0 Ideas aren\u2019t just options you can choose from, they are also building blocks for more sophisticated ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 Reading a dozen books on nutrition doesn\u2019t need to give you a dozen different choices for dinner, it can give you a more nuanced and comprehensive view of what you eat.<\/p>\n

    Often, when you gather enough ideas, you\u2019re best choices are actually reduced.\u00c2\u00a0 Who has more difficulty picking a car, the person who knows everything about vehicles, or the person who looks at the hundreds of models as being all the same?<\/p>\n


    \n<\/strong>Analysis Paralysis – Do More Ideas Make You Hesitant?<\/h2>\n

    Another counter-argument to a high-idea philosophy is that chronic reading will result in wasting time.\u00c2\u00a0 This can be the case where people pour through books, never getting started because they never feel ready.<\/p>\n

    I think the real problem with analysis paralysis is fear, not too many ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 If you doubt yourself, or you can\u2019t imagine the risks, you won\u2019t do anything.\u00c2\u00a0 Reading more books has nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n

    Holistic Learning and High-Idea Dieting<\/h2>\n

    The real value of ideas isn\u2019t the substance of those ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u2019s the connection you make between ideas that is crucial.\u00c2\u00a0 Connections between ideas allow you to make your own ideas, specifically geared to the challenges you\u2019re facing.<\/p>\n

    When I started to learn computer programming, I read several books on design and writing programs.\u00c2\u00a0 Often the specific ideas in the book weren\u2019t useful to me.\u00c2\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t in the same situation as the author of the book, so I couldn\u2019t use the idea.<\/p>\n

    However, those old, unusable ideas often came back to help me.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019d end up using them in a way I had never thought of when I originally read the book.\u00c2\u00a0 The author\u2019s suggestions weren\u2019t helpful, but they formed the building blocks of an idea that worked.<\/p>\n

    I think the same is true of almost any subject.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes the specific ideas you read are immediately helpful, often they aren\u2019t.\u00c2\u00a0 But gathering them can give you new insights which can lead to even better ideas.<\/p>\n

    Reading is Scattered, Work is Focused<\/h2>\n

    Since idea-gathering is cheap, I think it makes sense to read:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 In a high volume.<\/li>\n
    • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Over a wide variety of unrelated subjects.<\/li>\n
    • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Books that interest you (and encourage more reading) rather than books that are strictly \u201cimportant\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      My philosophy towards idea gathering is the opposite of my philosophy towards work.\u00c2\u00a0 When I\u2019m working, implementing an idea can take days, months or even years.\u00c2\u00a0 As a result, I focus my efforts on a few ideas I feel have promise, and I avoid hopping between pursuits I have no intention of committing to.<\/p>\n

      Ideas Don\u2019t Always Come From Books<\/h2>\n

      Books aren\u2019t the only sources of ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u2019d say, that the best ideas often can\u2019t be gathered in books.\u00c2\u00a0 Some subjects knowledge is highly codified, and reading books can form the base of your idea gathering (calculus).\u00c2\u00a0 In other subjects you don\u2019t have that privilege (running a business).<\/p>\n

      Books are one of the easiest sources of ideas that is often neglected, so I\u2019ve focused on them in this article.\u00c2\u00a0 However, any high-idea diet should include some other major consumption categories:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 People<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Make friends who know things you don\u2019t.\u00c2\u00a0 They can often give customized advice that has ideas that focus on your specific situation.<\/li>\n
      • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Experiments<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Short trials can give you a direct experience that a book can\u2019t provide.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don\u2019t experiment, you miss the unprintable wisdom that can\u2019t be found in books.<\/li>\n
      • \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Novelty<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Travel, find weird friends or join a unicycling club.\u00c2\u00a0 Newness is a source of ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        I think we all know someone who reads a lot but accomplishes little.\u00c2\u00a0 Although these people definitely exist, I think there are even more people who read little and accomplish less.\u00c2\u00a0 A high-idea diet can push you to become the person who reads a lot, and accomplishes even more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
