night\u2019s sleep, and you\u2019re addicted to coffee just to wake up in the morning, the answer is probably no.<\/p>\n<p>What I often find surprising is how many people miss sleep, without any need to.\u00c2\u00a0 Some people have a legitimate reason for not getting enough sleep.\u00c2\u00a0 New parents will have a hard time sleeping eight, uninterrupted hours a day.\u00c2\u00a0 But for most people, there is an opportunity for sleep, but sleep is made a low priority.<\/p>\n<h2>Example: The All-Night Exam Cram<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s December, and that means exams for many students.\u00c2\u00a0 And with exams, comes the Red Bull induced, 4 a.m. study sessions.\u00c2\u00a0 Some students take this approach to an extreme, staying up all night to study for an exam the next day.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t productive.\u00c2\u00a0 Studying isn\u2019t manual labor, it\u2019s brain work.\u00c2\u00a0 Sleep is connected with the learning process, and missing hours of sleep doesn\u2019t help you study.\u00c2\u00a0 Worse, if you\u2019re skipping sleep the day before an exam, the tiredness will hurt you more than missing a few hours of studying.<\/p>\n<h2>Make Sleep a Priority<\/h2>\n<p>All of this lost sleep is the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/14\/energy-management\/\">a myth<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This myth says that the work you accomplish is a direct result of the amount of time you put in.\u00c2\u00a0 While this kind of thinking might apply to twisting bolts in a factory, it\u2019s completely wrong when you need to use your mind.<\/p>\n<p>Mental work is a result of your energy levels.\u00c2\u00a0 If you are exhausted from lack of sleep, completing the same amount of work can take twice or three times as long.\u00c2\u00a0 Cutting sleep for a day or two can help in a crunch, but it doesn&#8217;t last.<\/p>\n<p>If you need more sleep, start making it a priority.\u00c2\u00a0 No suggestions will work if you still treat sleep like an afterthought to your day.\u00c2\u00a0 The truth is, if you can&#8217;t regularly accomplish your work with eight hours a night, there\u2019s little chance you could do better on five or six.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Make More Time for Sleep<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Put work early in the day<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 If you\u2019re working until 2 a.m. on a regular basis, it\u2019s probably because you don\u2019t manage your time well.\u00c2\u00a0 Move work into earlier hours in the morning.\u00c2\u00a0 This will put less pressure on you to stay up all night to finish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set a bed time<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Sounds childish, but it works.\u00c2\u00a0 If you currently go to bed whenever you feel like it, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll keep pushing your day later and later into the night.\u00c2\u00a0 Humans didn\u2019t evolve with electric lighting, so you can\u2019t just trust your body for when the best time to sleep is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get rid of the caffeine<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Caffeine is a band-aid.\u00c2\u00a0 It helps you stay awake, but it prevents you from healing the underlying problem.\u00c2\u00a0 If you can\u2019t sleep on caffeine, avoid it.\u00c2\u00a0 If you need it to wake up in the morning, here\u2019s some tips to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotthyoung.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/31\/7-tips-for-morning-alertness-without-the-caffeine\/\">wake up early without the drugs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eliminate your stress<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, so it\u2019s a pretty trite suggestion, but stress can impact your sleeping.\u00c2\u00a0 Your life needs to be set up to manage the stress that builds up.\u00c2\u00a0 Think about adding some garbage collecting routines to your life to take the mental trash out each day, so it doesn\u2019t build up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do less work, and do it smarter<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 You\u2019re current time isn\u2019t probably being used with 100% efficiency.\u00c2\u00a0 The popularity of productivity blogs is a statement to how bad most people are at handling procrastination.\u00c2\u00a0 Boosting your productivity should give you more time for sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set no-work hours<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 When planning your schedule for the next few months, set a few hours at the end of each day where you aren\u2019t allowed to work.\u00c2\u00a0 This will force you to get work done earlier in the morning, and make it harder to skip sleep
