Of all the projects I’ve undertaken over the years, I tend to get recognized most for The MIT Challenge or The Year Without English. But, in terms of actual impact on my life, Foundations was definitely the best investment.
Together with hundreds of students in the first two sessions, I managed to improve many of the basic elements of living well: I created healthier habits for exercising, eating and sleep; air-tight productivity systems; improved my financial planning, relationships and got more organized.
There’s obvious benefit in improving a foundation you’ve long recognized as needing work. I let my exercise habits slip after becoming a father. Working through the foundation for Fitness, I not only rebuilt the habit, but got into the best shape of my life—running my first marathon and losing the extra weight I had gained since my twenties.
Many of the students who have been through the Foundations program report similar benefits, making progress on stubborn habits that hadn’t stuck before: finally getting in shape, managing their money better or reading more books.
But there are also less obvious benefits of Foundations that weren’t even on my radar when I started. I had foundations I didn’t even realize were broken until I dove into that month of the project. For instance, it wasn’t until reaching Outreach that I realized I was missing essential elements in my approach to socializing, and I didn’t understand why I found it so difficult to keep things tidy until I got to Organization.
Students frequently shared similar stories of rewarding new practices they built that they wouldn’t have considered prior to joining. From improving habits of self-reflection, to reconnecting with old friends.
Whether you feel that some of your foundations need a tune up, or even some that need rebuilding from the ground up, I hope you’ll consider joining me over the next year to build better foundations together:
