New Website Design

The website has just received a facelift. The last design was an ugly, barnacled surface that I scraped together over two years ago. With the growing size of the blog and business, I felt it was time for an upgrade.

The design was done by Simayaa Technologies, a great team I suggest for anyone needing design work on a budget. There are still a few minor glitches that are being sorted out, but hopefully the website will be perfect in a day or two.

Obviously, (as with any design) it won’t please everyone. But I’d love to know your comments on the new look, good and bad. Also, if you have any suggestions for improvements, please share!

Check it out!

Very nice Scott. This site is a pleasure on the eyes.

    Hi Scott.

This is quite a different look, while it still maintains some similarities. The popular posts section down there sure is pragmatic. The bio section is cool.

Usaully I read your articles in google reader, so I didn’t take much attention at your website design. But the new design looks very good. I like the colors (green and dark grey).
One idea: I think it would be great if at the end of each article there would be smth like…”you also might like these articles to read..” or smht like that.

    Great work!

  • Robert

Much better than the previous one.

  • meteorith

What a change, Scott! And a good one.

I am a regular reader of your website for the quality of its articles and I like the way you put emphasis on the best ones, with these new design.
Like the big banneers too on the top, and the new picture that you put on your profile too ๐Ÿ˜›

While the previous design reminds me (a little bit) the one of stevepavlina, the first impression was a kind of Timferriss (for the color chart of the title for instance).

But don’t understand me wrong, your website is unique and please keep the good work. Btw, How is your french ๐Ÿ™‚

    very cool re-design ๐Ÿ™‚ I like it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Fedde

    Hi Scott,

It is most definitely better!! (but with all do respect you couldn’t do much worse ;))

    Keep up the good work!

  • Markus

    Hey Scott!

The new look is really cool! Much better than the old one.

You might want to raise the rss feed, email and twitter bar just a little for right now the feed symbol is a little covered by what’s below, at least in firefox. Unless it’s intentional ofcourse.

    Take care / Markus

    i like it ๐Ÿ˜›

    Hey Scott,

I like this new design. I’m glad that you’ve maintained the same colour scheme.

It would be better if you could do something with the typography.

    Keep it up, man!

  • Scott Young

Yes–the feed symbol was covered intentionally by the designers. I think ever since that icon was accepted as the de facto symbol for RSS, every blog designer has been coming up with newer ways to represent it on the page. Now all I need is a little Twitter bird and I’m set…

  • Beth@SmartFamilyTips

    Great new site design, Scott!

  • Amity

The last design was an ugly, barnacled surface that I scraped together over two years ago. – took you 2 years to realize this? Well, better late then never! I love the fonts, GUI is much better now. Happy blogging!

  • Ron

No worries Scott…it’s much better. Much! May I suggest a favicon though, they’re always great at helping one’s site to stand out.

Good luck sorting out the bugs.

  • Manuel

I like the new design, good job! ๐Ÿ™‚

Good colors, good layout. The only thing to fix that I see is the rss feed area

  • Rubi Torres

    I like it!

    Ecuadorian reader

  • Chantal

    Classy. I quite like it.

  • Niko

    Hi Scott,

I was very satisfied with your previous design and never really understood why it should be so ugly. ๐Ÿ™‚ The article was in the center, eye-catcher, the backround was not too bright, there were no distractions. This design is not much different, and I espesicially enjoy the “popular posts by categories”. But just now I became aware of a (little?) disadvantage: the space on the top for “get mor from life: over 700….” is quite huge now. So one has to scroll down every time immediately, visiting the website. This thing may seem unimportant but small stuff like this could be quite annoying in the long run.
    Think about it ๐Ÿ™‚

I will be happy to read another 700 posts, go for it!

  • Lukas Breznican

    Hi Scott,

I’ve been reading your blog for couple of months and the new design looks very good.
    Well structured, balanced, simple layout.
Definitely a step in right direction.
    Keep with the good work.

Looking forward to more good stuff.

    Cheers Lukas.

  • Hermes

I like it, so much better ๐Ÿ™‚ High time you did it ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Scott Young

No, I knew a bit before two years. But there’s always a million projects I should be spending my money on/pursuing, and it wasn’t until recently I finally fixed it.

True, this design pushes the content down slightly. But, as most of my regular readers reach this blog via RSS or email, I wanted the design to be as friendly as possible to new readers. Which means clearly explaining what the website is about to see if they’d be interested in reading more than just the article they stumbled upon.

All design is about maximizing tradeoffs.

    Thanks everyone!

  • Craig Harper

    Hey Scott.

I like the design. Much cleaner!

  • Alejandro Sierra

Yes, it looks cleaner and more appealing.

  • Jonathan Bennett

Very nice, Scott. Much nicer than your old design (which was good enough). I think I’ll invest in a custom design one day…

  • Faramarz – Anxious Candy

Very nice i remember coming here last year. It didn’t look nearly as good as it does now i actually thought it was a different site great job

  • David Safar

I like the new design a lot! I really like the idea of the full-width header and the partial-width content — when I do partial-width sites, I usually make the header partial-width too. I’ll have to swipe this idea for my design. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I have to agree with Niko, though, the green bar is too tall and pushes an awful lot of the content below the fold. Perhaps you could improve the trade-off by finding a way to fit the same information in less vertical space?

    Overall, a nice look!

  • Aurooba

Love it! No offense meant, the old design was an eye sore. This one is modern, sleek, and up to date. It’s similar enough not to make the reader feel they’ve arrived in an alien space, and new enough to make me nod with approval =D
